Invisalign® is a comfortable, practically invisible, alternative to traditional metal braces that older patients frequently request. Instead of metal braces that need to be attached by brackets and wires and then readjusted and tightened on a regular basis, Invisalign® uses custom-fitted clear aligners. The aligners are adjusted to apply gentle yet consistent pressure to push crooked teeth into place. On average, patients can expect to wear 8-12 aligners over a period of 12-24 months to achieve straightened teeth.
Invisalign® is not for everyone. The aligners cannot be used to treat major underbites or overbites, for example, because the material cannot be formed to fit too dramatic of shifts between individual teeth. However, Invisalign® provides numerous advantages to patients like you. One of the most common reasons our patients at Scripps Poway Dental Care ask for Invisalign® is because the aligners can be removed to eat and brush your teeth. Older adults also prefer Invisalign® because the braces are clear and provide a more professional appearance and smile.
If you are interested in Invisalign®, then you will need to form a long-term relationship with a dentist who can create personalized aligners that match your teeth and jaw. Regular appointments are needed to check the placement of your teeth and then craft a new aligner that is slightly more in position than the last one. For this procedure, a dentist will x-ray your teeth and speak with you to determine where you would like them to be at the end of the process.
